Chris–your points are well taken. I think it might be a bit much to ask an artist to think like a scientist, but you can certainly hold me to a higher standard. I just thought it was beautiful stuff.

The illustrations are striking, but how are they related to radiation from nuclear plants ? Some questions:
1. Where were the insects found, in relation to the nuclear plants ?
2. Were radiation levels measured ? If so with what results ?
3. Have similar mutations been seen in lab tests with radiation ?
4. Could insecticides cause similar mutations ?

I was reading this post only today and about two years after it emerges that also the mite Tetranyhus urticae has the same genes.. exactly the same suggesting that it could be an ancient lateral gene transfer.
